The region's remarkable ornithological richness (with 227 species currently confirmed) and the important escarpment forest are at the origin of the proposal to establish a conservation area in Cumbira.
Proposal for the National Institute of Biodiversity and Conservation Areas (INBAC) to establish a potential environmental conservation area in Morro do Moco region in Huambo. In this region there are important remnants of the afromontane forest, which is naturally restricted to narrow gorges and steep mountain valleys of the highest peaks, typically above 2000 m in altitude. Morro do Moco can be considered as the most important place in Angola for the conservation of birds, particularly for three endemic species, the mountain francolin (Pternistis swierstrai), the Angolan flycatcher (Dioptrornis brunneus) and the mountain-hummingbird (Cinnyris ludovicensis).
